ubuntu told me that it could not run the new desktop and had to run old

gconftool /apps/update-notifier/show_apport_crashes is now true,
/etc/default/apport has "enabled=1", the service says it's started,
but the behaviour is unchanged.
I'd love to be able to submit useful crash reports because the crashing
