problems but that certainly is not one.

I've had to drop the python-rsvg and python-cairo dependencies from
gnome-pkg-tools, sorry. They are currently rendering atk1.0 unbuildable
on armel, which blocks the entire desktop stack from being installable
there, and there is a wider problem along the same lines:

vte_terminal_set_emulation won't work either, unless it happens to be
recognized as a supported emulation mode. "xterm-256color" isn't, so
this solution wouldn't work.
There doesn't seem to be an obvious, clean way to fix the problem
Added vte, until it's clearer which of xfce4-terminal and vte should fix
this (as I said, though, it looks to me like only vte _can_ fix it,
though upstream seems unwilling).

That wasn't so bad... I restarted, chose awesome from the environment
menu option list at the bottom of the login screen - that produced
awesome, but no gnome, so I restarted, chose Ubuntu Classic - (not the
"no effects" choice).

After upgrading to Natty, I encountered this exact same problem when I logged
into Classic Mode (since Unity sadly only displays a transparent top bar and no
launcher). Oli's fix helped for some things, but as he mentioned, the clock
applet doesn't work. Also, I've found that while this gets the
Confirmed. I created a document in LibreOffice Writer 3.3.2, added
comments, and exported the document with comments. However, when I
opened the document in Evince, the comments are greyed out and cannot be
read.
