OK, more info! I now believe this is actually a gnome-terminal bug that
appmenu-gtk merely exacerbates. You can reproduce on stock gnome-terminal by:
1) Logging into a fresh session

Hi,
I've the same problem like "Liam O'Reilly wrote on 2010-10-20 #20"
The settings will not be stored if the home directory is mounted via nfs
(libdconf0 installed) .
If I use another user (local home dir) on the same system is't working.

problem -- John indeed did mean the session menu. I guess I let you
design guys fight it out, and then implement whatever the decision is
