I see what could cause a failure, we should simply don't call
gtk_widget_show/hide but gtk_menu_bar_local_show/hide and set there the
private structure, no need of new signals like in your patch

Personally, I searched deep for any log/hint about this issue and found
nothing. I ended up re-installing Ubuntu. Sucks, but it fixed the issue.
In my case, I had been upgrading (not re-installing) from 7.04, so I suppose
that there was some old config somewhere messing with newer expectations.

I put together a branch with the patch for easier merging for someone
with rights to commit, and put a build in my ppa of 'metacity -
1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1.1~ppa0' (https://launchpad.net/~smoser/+archive/ppa).

Corrupt graphics after bootspl
I have this problem too (bug 696455 now it's a duplicate of this bug)
but I often meet this one not only at session start, but even randomly
sometimes. It's quite frequent issue for me, if I kill indicator applet
by the way (just I noticed it can trigger this problem more frequently,
I got this oth
Could someone please test the Lucid brasero the is currently in
-proposed? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for
documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thanks!

the segfault and the XError are likely different issue, crashes when
killing the indicator applet are an another bug in the indicator stack
which is being worked

Hi I tried to do this,
but gnome-settings-daemon package has no debug flag equivalent package
.(gnome-settings-daemon-dbg or something).
But I did some testing with gnome-settings-daemon --no-daemon --debug
(killed the other instance of gsd before).
But .. you don't see any log.
PC:~$ gnome-set
Oh .. it was kind of long, here as the output as a file...
