I had the same problem in xubuntu 10.10 and the solution was to "sudo
apt-get remove gnome-settings-daemon", not sure why that component is
installed in an xfce environment? I guess this is not a solution for you
guys here though...

As Marc suggested if you turn off the visual effects the issue does go away.
System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects -> set to none

Small update: I'm now able to run quadrapassel on Maverick. I'm not sure why,
as the gnome-games package does not seem to have been updated.
I also tried Natty, but got the same error as above. So this is still an issue
in Natty.
