please update your system. you are not using the latest empathy in Maverick.
After update delete all accounts in empathy and reboot/logout, then add
facebook account again and let us know if the problem persists.

I just tried changin alias in Yahoo and on the other account there was
no change noticed. Alias change in telepathy-haze is not yet
implemented. see bug 404022
