Stop PRESS - there's something weird going on. Although the Maverick RC
Live CD produces different sounding results with the KennoVO and BruceR

settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon" fixes the issue, cycling of
layouts stops, xev output stops (no more XKLAVIER_STATE messages without
end just other events like my mouse movements etc). After relaunching

yes, it IS important to see the duplicates - a lot of questiones
doubled here were already answered there. The problem is
reproduceable, the problem goes away (with "native" kb applet
indicator) if you turn off keyboard plugin in g-s-d tree in
gconf-editor and in that case you will still be able to
gmail fixed.

This can be related to bug 640807, but the twist here is that the
resolution was correct the first time, on the 9-23 which was after the
g-s-d change in question there.
Can you please try to boot from the 10.10 RC Desktop CD and see if the
correct resolution is chosen? Then attach dmesg and xrandr
it was fixed on 2010-08-05 so the fix should certainly be in Maverick
already.

Weirder and weirder. Reinstalling the packages didn't get around what
has proved to be my cockup, but a completely fresh distribution
installation restored Sound Juicer complete with an MP3 capability.

What is the gconf key to hide the indicator? I'm looking through the
changes (http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/maverick
/gnome-settings-daemon/maverick/revision/101#plugins/keyboard/gsd-
keyboard-xkb.c), and it seems to be
"/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/disable_indi
Also, manually creating the key with "gconftool-2 -s
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/disable_indicator -t bool
true" then logging out and back in like marmuta said doesn't seem to
work.

Same problem here under Lucid 32bit with all updates available to date
(01.10.2010). I've noticed, that evince calls pdftops (see top via
xterm), which seems to be the cause for both, the massive delay and a
heavy CPU workload (100% on one of the cores).

I'm not sure if this is the same issue, but here's what I had.
I had the following entry in /etc/fstab:
UUID=B634D59634D55A47 /media/VIDEO ntfs rw,users 0 2
Now apparently ntfs-3g ignores some mount options, since in /etc/mtab it was
displayed like this:
/dev/sdb1 /media/VIDEO fuseblk rw,noexec,n
