Ran memtest on the system already, it's not a memory issue.
The system that I'm using is old and for testing. Strange thing is no
issues with Ubuntu 8.04.
After removing and re-installing ubuntu-desktop everything seems fine.
I'm guessing something was wrong with the origin

maximum cpu usage by gvfsd-smb-brows and and the following error:

that works fine here, not confirming, could you try the same on a new
user there?
