Ok, found the problem. I have an uid of 500 for me. This is for
historical reasons to be compatible with any backups. So I had the user
list feature already enabled but by default only users with an uid of
1000 and above have been listed in the new gdm. This is why I had only
the login button visib

i've still to notice the usual mess in my applets: hopefully this

Regardless of whether the behaviour itself is a bug, the undocumented
nature of the solution is definitely a bug. I spent several hours
attempting to discover the cause of this issue, before stumbling upon
this bug report from google.
I would recommend that a simple wrapper around /usr/share/gnome
I just experienced this bug with Lucid, and with Firefox specifically
experiencing issues with a full screen flash video. The message wouldn't
go away with xkill or itself, so usef "pkill gnome-panel" as someone
else here notes. Update Manager was run this morning, so I should be
fairly current.

As speculated above, can confirm mission-control is holding onto user
log in data. After sudo apt-get purge'ing empathy and telepathy-*,
mission-control is still left running in memory. I ended up doing 'sudo
kill -9 pid' on the mission-control process in question before re-
installing empathy, but

I don't know if anyone has noticed but disabling compiz fixes two bugs
it fixes this one and when ubuntu goes into power saver if you have
firefox open you cannot type in the browser it also fixes this problem.
I know there is a bug report for that problem as well so you may want to

I've also run into this problem. I first experienced it a few days ago
and it magically fixed itself. I burned about 3 or 4 DVDs since
Wednesday night when it just started working on its own until now, where
I'm having the same problem again and it's not going away.

Dana, the fn-key problem that you describe here also appeared when I
went from Karmic to Lucid on my HP ProBook 4510s, which has an ATI
Mobility Radeon HD-4330. The fn-key problem disappeared after I
installed ATI Catalyst Display Driver version 10.6, which I downloaded

No luck with the mentioned 2.6.32 kernel, so I removed it and went back
