times to give my right hand a break. Been using my right hand for a few
months now so decided to switch over today but there was no change with
system->preferences->mouse. xmodmap does work.

There is something weird going on here. I have the latest evince and I
was getting the same errors. Creating ~/.gnome2/evince was not
enoughI had to touch last_settings to get evince to open at all.
For the record, my home dir is NFS mounted. And although evince opens

I forgot to say, that this is a clean install of 10.04. I did, however,
have the /home on another partition, so users home directories and

Nope.
Actually the problem is GNOME related. If you adjust the keyboard layout
to be change with "Ctrl+Shift" (and not as is by default with
"Alt+Shift"), these keys are blocked by GNOME and the keyboard layout
changer.

This bug has cropped up again in Lucid. I was able to work around it by
disabling the option "use_time_for_policy" in the gconf-editor's
settings for gnome-power-manager. I no longer get the warning.
However, it was causing unwanted hibernation any time I unplugged the
laptop before I did that.
This bug was fixed in the package gnome-desktop - 1:2.30.2-0ubuntu1
