But I don't understand it. The gnome-panel is frozen from the moment I log into
Gnome. Is a backtrace possible on a program that is already frozen? I thought a
backtrace only shows debugging code that happens after you run gdb.

While testing this with the automatic upgrade tester I found a bug in
the dpkg status parser for the non-interactive upgrade case. Its fixed
in bzr now but I will do a SRU for it because landscape (and possible
others) use the non-interactive upgrade mode.

Back here because even with Terminal Server Client, it doesn't work.
You need xnest package to enable xdmcp in protocol menu from Terminal Server
Client.
But the most frustrating is that it starts, works 30 sec to login and then
kicks you out (using a server that runs xdmcp fine with Hardy).

A member of ubuntu-fr community have another problem with this bug.
He uses compiz "normal effect" and default theme "Ambiance" on laptop
too.
He tried to test with metacity.
When he turns off compiz, no difference. When he reactivates compiz, the
two panels disapear both.
