Well, it happened just once because I never ran out of battery before
and don't plan to do that in the future.
I'd changed my power settings from default "suspend" to "shut down".
My syslog rotation is default one, so the oldest log available is dated
2010-05-26. It's kinda too late to be sorry.

Hi Leo
Yes, I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid, and after that upgrade I could not
boot normally (only in rescue mode using a Karmic kernel and then only
in a console). So the /home that I retained, when I re-installed, was
from that dist-upgrade.

I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 10.04 32bits;
The email shows with "[?]" as described in the previews comments
The only workaround I found is to go View / Character Encoding and chose
something other than "Default" like UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1; once I do that,

First, now I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 64bit and bug is confirmed with this
version also.
Bad hang up, attached gdb didn't take any commands while gnome-panel
was in infinite loop.
Also whole desktop was pretty much useless.
But I managed (somehow, I don't know what I did to get it work) to
open terminal
Ok, I figured out how to reproduce this problem. Turn off the power to
your computer without (hold down the power button for 4 seconds)
shutting it down from the menu. If you do this, the next time you start
up Ubuntu you will have the messed up panel icons.

I have replaced brasero with Gnome Baker.
I have to admit that bugs like theses should be solved in 2 days .
otherwise the whole distro loose credibility!
Btw what is nice is that you just need to look into the repo and you can find a

So there are two problems here. Compiz no longer ships a file called
compiz.real and gnome-session doesn't have any kind of fallback when the
WM saved in your session no longer exists. A hack in the compiz package
to ship a symlink would fix this one instance of the problem but a fix

Actually, I have few instant messaging accounts (MSN, Jabber, Gtalk, and
IRC x 2). Sometimes (not really often), I start Empathy by mistake so I
try to close it... But Empathy's coming bacj just after all my accounts

Well, actually, I encountered no trace of compiz.real in the various
error logs I've checked.
Also, I have removed any "session" links saved in the
$HOME/.compiz/session directory, but some seem to make their way back,
so maybe that is indeed the problem.
