By default the "CD Quality, MP3" profile is broken.
It seems to encode to 128kbit CBR, while it intends to encode to VBR Quality 6.
Changing the VBR Quality has no effect at all.

to indicator and has been confirmed by comments there on distribution
which don't use indicators but only standard applets so it's likely a

I was finally able to get this working.
The instructions given in #12 are half of the fix. Once you have the
icon put in the right place, you need to update the icon cache for the
changes to actually take effect. I accomplished that with the following
command:
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/s
