Comparing the .xsession-errors between computers that have the problem

Switching to tty2 and running "/usr/lib/libconf-2-4/gconf-sanity-
check-2" produced a bunch of errors. One of which was that
"/usr/local/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.default" could not be created.
Running: "sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.default" solved

I am also using Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 on a HP dv3000 and the same problem occurs!
First the icon on the general tab disappeared, I re-stablish using the

The problem was solved when i removed a .svg-file (inkscape) and a few large
tiff images.
The svg preview was never generated, so the problem might be connected to that.

I had indicator-applet after upgrade from Karmic to Lucid, but no
indicator-sound. I expect such problems on upgrade, since I can't have
ubuntu-desktop installed because it conflicts with fcron, which I need.

This also effect my Dell 1501 laptop and HP 3323 desktop. Both work fine
with command line eject cdrom to open and eject -t cdrom to close.

Thank you, Pauls. The fglrx driver suggested by Ubuntu was the generic:
"3D-accelerated proprietary graphics driver for ATI cards." Installing
the driver seemed to create more (and more serious) problems than it
solved, so I uninstalled it. (I'm not a gamer and probably don't need
accelerated graph
Is syncing brightness to actual_brightness an acceptable solution to
this problem? If so, can we push to get this fix into Lucid, or at least
Maverick?
