Ugh... So there's a clear conflict with the current Ubuntu package,
which has a patch specially cooked to hide interfaces from the GUI, to
avoid conflicts with NetworkManager. Why the hell doesn't UbuntuStudio
use NetworkManager? Have artists special needs in that regard?!

Thanks for conjecture, but if this was caused by Xubuntu 10.04, why is
it present in all distributions using Xfce? For example, Xfce now refers
those experiencing this to http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/18904 . That
would seem to make this much more than an Xubuntu bug.

I use chromium-browser in Ubuntu 10.04 RC.
I selected chromium-browser in the dialog of gnome-default-applications-
properties, and it actually worked as a default web browser. However,

I'm using Lucid 10.04 RC.

I checked that the pointer patch works with the latest Ubuntu gtk-vnc
0.3.10-2ubuntu2 (source is at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source
/gtk-vnc/). Somehow I doubt that anyone will be applying it with only
two days to go, though!
