I have this same issue. Same drive (Pioneer DVR-218L SATA DVD+-R burner). Only Audio CDs affect it. Audio CDs crash nautilus and sound juicer cannot access the drive. Interestingly, vlc can PLAY the disc. Drive tested and works in Windows 7. Drive has only been in service a week, doubt it's fault

@Chris Coulson: I fixed Chris' issue by cleaning his drive. gnome-power- manager was crashing because it had no place to store temporary data, because he had less then a K left. This issue is reproducible and still very important to fix. At least crash without crashing gdm. @Toddq: I did not know
