Thanks Sebastien, However I had to get my system up so I backed up my
files to usb and installed Hardy.
Never had a problem with XP, Jaunty, or Hardy. I'm pretty sure the bug
is related to Karmic and not hardware since I have been using Evolution
in Hardy for a long time with no crashes.

Running the following batch script in a terminal window, then giving
focus to OO Writer clearly shows that the problem is gnome-screensaver-
command, not blueproximity:

bewildered why we haven't seen issues like this before, as the method I
chose for inhibiting the screensaver is used elsewhere already (eg,
Totem uses the same method when not running under GNOME, for example

I'm affected by the bug as well. Same symptomatic as decribed by BP_CH.
The proposed fix of reinstalling rsyslog didn't work for me. I'm not
using french locales - I'm using german or ES_AR most of the time.
