Is this the same as bug 397617? brightness keys only don't wrk with KMS

Yes, all updates have been applied. Does that every night. I think that
the problem is the result of some recent updates. I do know that this

I can confirm this issue. ComputekPR has this issue with Karmic-386, I
have it with fully updated Lucid-AMD64.

Argh, this is an utter pain to debug, but that's what I found out:
* When this happens, gdm only writes a "failsave.log" with a single
number in it. No other logs.
* Wrapping gdm-binary into strace in the upstart script introduces
enough slowdown to make gdm startup succeed. Yay heisenbug.

above is the same diagnosis I was about to make. Is it possible to
determine where on the panel the applet is located, and then expand in
the appropriate direction based on that? (i.e. if it's on the far right,
move the left ed
