I found the reason for this behavior. It is a bug in teh upstart script
/etc/init/gdm.conf
Inside the script there is a test which dm should be started. If not gdm
it exits, but it exits with EXIT_STATUS=1, which then triggers the start
of the failsafe session.

I'v been using the Lucid kernel (2.6.32-6) for nearly a week and I
havent noticed this problem. The problem seems to have reduced a lot

Surprise, with the new GDM package I have a usable notebook again. It
seems, the patch does what it should. Thank you for all the help. But I
think, such a bug should be found before so many users get an unusable
