This is still an issue with Karmic. I'm experiencing exactly the same
problem. Please let me know what information is needed to finally get
this bug fixed.
Steps to reproduce:
1. System is running on battery, backlight brightness is at the value set in
brightness_dim_battery (50 in my system).

Yes this problem still exists in karmic. After plugging in a camera an
incomprehensible mess of error dialogs is spawned
by the foto app du jour that pops up (either f-spot of gthumb) and photo's
cannot be imported.
After reading the above bug reports I realize this is because gvfs has mounted

previous disk from the physical device: the disk icon remained on my

As an update, network-manager now finally works again in karmic, no more of
those various random crashes and non handling of my network interfaces.
Documentation is still poor, but at least it works.
So, after around 2 years in being broken in various ways in each release after
dapper, it seems
