This started happening on my AMD 64 X4 w/ 4G in the past couple of
weeks. It is consistent, in that the screensaver never kicks in and
power saver never turns off display (but I can run the command in a
terminal and it works). I didn't go digging in bug reports at first
because, as such an in-you

+1 in Karmic. Evince is very slow when opening pdf files and crashes
many times on resizing. It does not even need to be to 400%, any size.
I have attached a pdf file that always causes the problems for me.

Sadly gdb doesn't seem to find the source file, which does not allow us
to get details about the crash. From what I see in the code, we could
crash if libhal returns an array without telling us its real size. We
could check that the code in libhal is not buggy in that regard, but
anyway HAL is now
OK, I've finally found http://bugs.gentoo.org/278760 which explains that
libhal returns NULL when no devices are found, not even setting the
number of devices to 0. So we should check that before trying to add
them to our internal list.

It is reproducible with certain pdfs. I've attached an old PRL article
that renders badly everytime I open it in Evince.
I will upload screenshots of how it appears in Evince and Xpdf in
subsequent comments.
This bad rendering has happened on Gutsy and Hardy too as far as I
remember. I'm using an

All well and good, but
(1) this is going to affect everybody who has a Windows partition
mounted on anything but /home. That does not seem very user-friendly.
(2) AFAICS, in apparmor, every different application will have its own
settings. The old way: I could manage permissions in /etc/fs
just read this after my previous comment. it's good that by default
/media and /mnt will have these permissions. But... where did my
/windows directory come from? didn't ubuntu put it there? at least,
other people seem to have a /windows partition and I don't remember
making that naming decision my

I had the same issue.
Running sudo gnome-power-preferences I've seen that the configuration assigned
at this level was being listened by the application instead of the user's
settings. Change the configuration here and ya está.
Now it seems that the problem is with user preferences

Steps for me to reproduce this are:
1. Open my home directory /home/ben
2. Navigate to the /home directory using gui
3. Right click on /ben OR click to open /ben

However, part of the problem is related to the way Ubuntu is handling the
incoming notification for participating in a group chat, which appears with
a "click here" option at a notification bubble.

The same pdf rendered neatly in xpdf.
The difference is more pronounced when zoomed in and when you're trying
to read equations. I like evince because its fast-loading and I just
wish it wouldnt do this with the old PRL pdfs that I have to read
frequently.
