I started with xterm instead of gnome.
I inserted the CD.
Then, I called gnome-panel. Nothing occurred.

Same problem here, though I don't know whether this is a bug or simply a wrong
decision about the desktop management policy it's really quite annoying
re-enter your password every single time you have to change frequency of your
microprocessor after a couple of minutes.

After upgrading ubuntu 9.04 to ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala), this issue
generated i.e. no effect applied even i select "Normal" or "Extra".

As stated in the GNOME bug report, installing 7zip-full fixes the
problem. So this seems to be a problem of unzip not handling these
characters correctly.

I've had this happen a few times. I'm not doing anything in particular
and suddenly the panel disappears and other things start misbehaving
(sound is lost for example). Looking at .xsession-errors I see a bunch
of failed attempts
