Ok guys, here's the deal:
Not only GDM is not starting but also TTY1-TTY7 are being terminated, and that
before GDM is attempted to be started.
Of course GDM cannot start if there is no TTY available.
Further this problem occurs only with kernel 2.6.31-14
kernel 2.6.28-15 boots perfectly!

This is something Gnome did, not Ubuntu devs. And I'm not really sure
how feasible it would be to preserve an older version of gdm. It'd be an
extra package to support, for one. If it needed an older version of the
Gnome libraries, things would quickly get problematic.

I don't think this is actually a missing feature, just a case of UI
change and poor documentation. To put a panel on the second monitor, add
it to the primary monitor, then hold + click + drag to move it to
the second monitor. This is described in the help, but is far from
intuitive.

In Karmic, nautilus crashes if a remote identification has changed.
If I access the remote host by ssh in a terminal, I get the usual :

An update:
I haven't seen this bug for a while now, although I have one more thing to
note. One of the times I did see this bug, Rhythmbox would not let me copy a
podcast to the iPod due to a permissions problem of some kind (not able to
write to the iPod). In the output I attached in my previou
for me this happens when I burn a disc from nautilus
burning directly from brasero the disc label is correct, burning from
nautilus burn:/// position brasero use CDROM as label

brasero doesnt write disk label (writes CDROM instead)

compared to the usual behavior.
I wanted to disable the user listing at login and the option has
disappeared.

starting Evolution I sometimes get the error above (when I start the
application from the program menu I see in the process table that

I tried to change volume using rhythmbox slider (on top right corner) or just
using mouse wheel over this button.
But rhythmbox crashed.
I can reproduce it always if constantly change volume during 2-5
Ladies and gentlemen here comes the solution:
I realized by connecting to the machine via ssh that actually everything is
running, ie. GDM, X, Pulse, whatever you just don't get to see anything which
is due to a completely out of range resolution of horizontal 268kHz, vertical
281Hz.

Any ideas for a temporary fix? Maybe by using a script (at least for
solving a reboot issue)?
