I tried the brightness applet workaround, and it worked.
Then, I clicked on the brightness applet, but then I increased the brightness

Just to add that this happens for brasero and for totem too with the
same error message (but without (empathy:3052) -warning).

This still happens once in a while, and seems to only happen if the computer is
left for a while in screensaver mode (at least an hour seems to be the lower
limit). Using the newest standard kernel:
