I can confirm the patch above doesn't help. Backlight still flickers
after patch has been applied.
I noticed that when the backlight flickers there is no gnome-power-
manager icon in the panel. Restarting g-p-m a number of times until it
stops flickering also make the icon appear.

I've posted a patch on the GNOME bugtracker, and I also created a PPA
that contains the patched package:

Add the software source ppa:martin.von.wittich/libwnck-nodimming to your
computer and run sudo apt-key adv --keyserver subk
xev looks correct (there's one event each for key press and key release,

handling of your particular backlight device. Can you please do

Hm, all this output was from just inserting media into the card reader
once? This looks very bouncy then. Also, does the inserted card actually
have 5 partitions which are named "movies", 'downloads', etc.? This

On Karmic you can now position the panels with
$ gconftool --type int --set /apps/panel/toplevels/top_panel_screen0/monitor 1
$ gconftool --type int --set /apps/panel/toplevels/bottom_panel_screen0/monitor
1
On my system this moves the top and bottom panels from LVDS to external
VGA.
