"pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio" doesn't seem to fix it, neither does
"killall pulseaudio && pulseaudio".

I guess gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio (0.10.16-1ubuntu3) causes it.
Because after fresh install karmic beta, and

Hi thanks for responding. This is worse than I had thought. I am on a
different machine so I am now able to type unincombered! I tried to

The problem with gecko-mediaplayer is as I said. For me at least, it
works very infrequently.
I click the link, it plays. I then close the window and it won't play
again --- the new window opens up, the plugin loads, and then it just
sits there at "Stopped". Clicking play has no effect
If I right-click on the plugin and choose “copy location”, then play the
location at the command line using mplayer, I get the following:

piece of paper for an icon. Screenshot attached.

I tried on another machine where I have gnome-mplayer/gecko-mediaplayer
0.9.8 but a different mplayer version (its an svn snapshot from end of
last April) and there I have the same problem as Kevin. So, I'd also say
its either a backend problem or a problem with that site.

all characters are missing.
okular has the same problem, but xpdf does display the file correctly.
In the terminal where I launch evince, many error messages are
displayed.

OK, no problems.
Now, back to your issue: you may not have done anything wrong, it may be
as simple as you are not on the required Ubuntu version...
Are you running Ubuntu Karmic? If you are not, it will not work. The
necessary requirements are:
- Ubuntu Karmic (a.k.a. Ubuntu 9.10, currently on
