Even with only one soundcard, if you have analog and digital outputs,
which most motherboards do these days, those will show up as separate
devices in alsamixer.

tries your instructions are guaranteed to experience the same issue that
you're having.
Your instructions don't work anyway - your use of usermod is
syntactically incorrect, and your steps don't actually create a home

It transpires that the problem is to do with the mobile broadband that many of
us now use. Its compression methods are what mangled the files, though I have
now moved from Vodafone ot T-mobile with none of the symptoms.

Just booted into karmic using a netbook. I like the panels to be the
minimum size (18px) on netbooks.
A few issues:
1) Cannot make upper gnome panel smaller than 25px (the number goes lower, but
the panel stays the same size)
