I will echo the sentiments of others that I consider this a far more
important issue than it is being credited with. Many users have
substantial content in .PST files and need to migrate it. Just do a
Google search and you'll find so many hits, including from the Ubuntu
Forums.

I rebuilt gtk+2.0-2.17.11 with the upstream fix and that solves the
problem for me.
As far as I know IBM plans to release 8.5.1 in October '09. There are no
public betas for that release available. So I suspect that Karmic will
not be able to run Lotus Notes.
Is there anything I can do?

You seem to be the first one to complain about this issue there, not
confirming most configs I see have a higher number of icons than that in
the notification area without issue
