I have similar behaviour from my gdm. It starts X, somehow thinks it
should be killed (or something dies?) right after it started and tries
again. It doesn't even start a greeter (like in Pete's case), although
upstart does claim gdm is actually started.

package gets upgraded? Since yesterday evening, the devicekit-disks
upgrade kills the old daemon, which kills the cd-rom polling process
along with it. I suppose this has something to do with it.

and the all the patches until *now* and I still have the problem after a
restart.
The crash file also contains ' devicekit-disks 006-0ubuntu4', just to be
sure. (I was sent to this page by apport).

Yes, a clickable button is missing. Typing "^" does not work, at least
not for me. I use the german default keyboard layout and need to press
the circumflex button twice to get a single "^" sign printed (that works
in all other applications). Pressing this button once, twice or even

It turns out that it's rhythmbox's fault. gstreamer grew a richer URI
format for cdda:// URI's, and rhythmbox has been using a different
format for a long time, which has happened to work, because gstreamer
ignored the extra data in there.

I am hitting the same problem. This reproduces 100% of the time.
Additionally, it takes me to the system configuration screen. It has
somehawe reset the hostname of my laptop, too, and asks me to create a

the title suggested it was an upstart script issue but it might not, can
you start xorg without using gdm but by running startx directly? do you
get any crash in /var/crash?

When print some PDF files in evince, I got a blank page with following contents:

The same PDF files can be printed correctly by acroread.

The same file can be printed in Jaunty without problem.
