Well, I could reproduce the bug with Karmic alpha 4 (i386) as my host OS
(outside of VirtualBox). I don't think that VirtualBox is a good trail, but
it's just my 2cents.

I did it the other way around but I can still confirm this bug;
installed Ubuntu then installed kubuntu-desktop. I have the same
problem, I can no longer select the Desktop Manager.

Sorry for the lousy reporting. The bug is at least one layer down in
devicekit-power.
I can't reproduce it. Killing devicekit-power makes it work again.
Note that the correct value is always present in /proc/acpi info,
even when devicekit-power gets it wrong.

That's because the url you provided is a webpage with the player and
stream url embedded.
I looked at the webpage code, found the stream url, decoded it and it
plays fine in totem. Here's the stream url:

The bug is still present: the allocation method (which is responsible
for this bug) has not changed. Pages are loaded into memory as one big
image which is then displayed. Once there's no memory left, the
operating system terminates the process as it should.
The only way to fix this is
I've experienced the same behaviour in Jaunty. Running the underlying
gpg command from the terminal, I saw the error:
gpg: no writable public keyring found: eof
Key generation failed: eof
A listing of ~/.gnupg shows:
