Switching desktops still fail in 9.04 amd 64, although in far less epic
manner.
Now the problem seems to appear only when I use 2 displays (Xinerama),
and the problem is a crash.

I've got the same problem here. Changing the audio settings in Gnome
preferences from pulse-audio to Alsa, makes a difference. wma files are
being played, but chopped terribly. It's impossible to hear the song.
Using Alsa as setting in Gnome does not make rhythmbox hang though.

It must be something DRI related i guess as that has changed between these

Looks like the crash has been fixed in updates today. libgtk2.0-0
libgtk2.0-0-dbg libgtk2.0-bin libgtk2.0-common libgtk2.0-dev all
updated.
- update and no more crash where it was very reproducible.

I'm not able to test this in Karmic right now, but i suppose that
evolution in karmic is a new version that does not have this bug. My
evolution version in Jaunty also does not have this bug, but it is on
Intrepid version, both are one in my virtualbox and my wife's pc at work
