preferences should have an additional option that detects if an external
screen is connected. This option would turn off the laptop screen when
the laptop lid is closed, making the desktop go from an a dual-screen

I also had the same problem, faces disappeared right after upgrading to
Jaunty. I also had tried EricT's tricks, with no success. Yesterday I
managed to make them reappear.
What I noticed was that in system -> administration -> login window ->

Further checks seem to indicate errors with the window or file manager.
I have tried launching various applications, each appears to be a bit
slower than with Ibis (I know how subjective that sounds). Also, when
attempting to do an action such as "file->open" which requires opening
the file manager

the delete key. with "Error removing file: Operation not permitted"
works if you empty the folder first.
dir is "chmod -R 0777 folder"

Whether or not this is a bug with gconf, I would still consider this a
bug. Something is changing/setting the permissions of those files,
which inhibits basic functionality.
I don't think that a basic user should have to know that they need to
change the permissions back to their own in the ~/.db
I have the problem on a brand new Jaunty AMD64 install. As Johnathon
wrote, I can reproduce the error and also can use the setting of
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0 to temporarily bypass it.
To reproduce, I open a terminal and type "ssh myu...@myserver".

Well, without trying I was able to replicate the events that led to the
first lock up. In Calendar, I was modifying a recurring event,
selected All Instances and wham. I renamed the .evolution file,
restarted and was able to replicate it a third time. I am not sure how
to generate the stacktr

I wish I could tell you more but I've only been using linux/ubuntu for about 3
hours of actual computer time. I just got that error message and right now I'm
not sure what it is not doing or what I'm missing by getting this error. Once
I figure out what is that the system is supposed to be do
I've tried to search for the exact command i've made, copied from the
internet. Maybe was it "sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults 13 01" instead of
"sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults", i did this cause i've been trying to
remove gdm but i've seen that a lot of gnome functions were not
avaliable without it, s

$ sudo apt-get install
$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall vinagre
And see if that fixes it?

This is a regression compared to 8.10 in that 9.04 broke the work-around
for it. In 8.10 it was at least possible to say "ctrl:nocaps" in
xorg.conf.

and re-installed Ubuntu 8.4 - with all the time and file swapping &
saving that entails - so I could continue working! It was certainly a
strange phenomenon and I hope no one else encounters the same problem
