I had the exact same problem just after upgrading on Sunday. Rebooting
the system eventually fixed the problem (it took me 48 hours to figure
since I am not used to rebooting when I do not need to).
I suspect some older dynamic libraries were still in use along with new
ones.

So far, things are looking good here. Nautilus desktop icons no longer
disappear when mounting a cdrom or dvd, and I was able to burn an iso
image using the revised brasero (2.26.1-0ubuntu1).

Binary package hint: nautilus
Usually nautilus should focus on the folder/file which are beginning
with the entered letter/string. Since the update to ubuntu 9.04 nautilus
isn't doing that!

Today I installed the new 1:0.111.8 update-manager, restarted my
computer, and I still have the brasero burning program in my
"distribution upgrades" list, grayed out, without the option to install
it. Is there something else I have to do to get brasero to update?

This bug is still present in Jaunty and libgnomecanvas 2.26.
Unfortunately, the patch I removed from 2.20 to fix it is no longer
present in 2.26. It looks like the libgnomecanvas people made the
situation worse and incorporated the bug upstream.
The symptom is that what is drawn lags substantial
with which view/mode are you getting that? works fine for me with
browser mode and list/icon view.
