OK, sorry about that. Even though gdm is not buggy as such, preload
worked for the intrepid gdm and not for jaunty. So the problem is (imho)
that preload is not configured correctly for the new jaunty gdm.

Thanks for the report Zied, is this really a bug? I mean, there's no
window selected when you start your session that's why it's displaying a
default icon. the behavior is the same in previous releases so this is
not a gnome 2.26 specific issue, removing that from the title to avoid
confusion.

After downloading and installing the debian from intrepid, I tried
upgrading to the latest libbrasero-media0 and brasero packages through
the update-manager. This worked fine, and it works. So, as a workaround
to this bug, install the intrepid version and upgrade it to the jaunty
version.

Weird. I installed some of the debug symbols and it crashed normally.
After I'd installed all the debugging symbols, it didn't crash, though
the output to 'less' was funny. I dug through the last output of gdb to
send that, then reran the command, and it crashed again.

I'm using ubuntu 8.10, evolution 2.24.3-0ubuntu1
In the future I should skip the ubuntu bugtracker and just report
upstream for this sort of bug?

backup your evolution folder/emails and start again, are you sure fsck
did that? it should repair the problems on the disc not cause more.

@Sebastien: I partly agree with you, I've never experienced serious bugs
with Evolution and it quickly became my favorite PIM.
And this is where I party agree with you, Evolution has become my
desktop-app of choice, I use it extensively. In the version of Evo used
in Intrepid, everything worked fl

Bug 331589 is the part which uses the PC speaker on random events, like
in gnome-terminal (which can be influenced by GNOME) and system shutdown
(which is outside of GNOME). This one will be fixed for Jaunty (fix
committed already).
I leave this for the "does not use nice pulseaudio X11 sound".
