You can browse and mount a windows/samba share in Nautilus, but on
reboot the mount is not kept. An option to "Mount permanent" would be
nice and very useful. This might also be useful for other network
protocols.

I am not a developer, but I think this bug is a duplicate of bug 303578.
Though that bug does not seem to mention the "About This Document" or

Rhythmbox doesn't skip bad files
I should be more specific - the session I'm starting with x11vnc via gdm
(the KillInitClients = False trick documented elsewhere) keeps the
settings daemon alive. It seems to still die under TightVNC server when
started by xrdp.

I had the same problem with update manager. Ekiga appeared in the list
of available updates, but I was unable to check the box to install it.
Synaptic installed it without any problems. I did not try apt-get at the
command line.
