Thank you for your report!
However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate an useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system

I can reproduce this under jaunty.
1. Open up gnome-system monitor, "Processes" tab.
2. View -> All processes.
3. Open terminal, execute: "sudo updatedb"
4. Confirm updatedb is running (ps).
5. Refresh gnome-system-monitor list, updatedb does NOT appear in list of
processes.

I've got a theory what's going on here, but I'm still looking at it.
I think it only happens if I hover the cursor fairly low on the icon; in

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: evolution
Running Jaunty, evolution freezes a lot. This is what I got when I tried
to close evolution. Monitoring it in GDB just showed it repeatedly
spawning threads, and then killing them.

via gio gvfs fuse. gnome-vfs which was what OOo had been previously
using is EOL and will be removed with Gnome 3.0 next spring (2010) so
fixing that is or little real use.

So, as a user, is there a workaround until we get a proper fix?

this is a wishlist bug, but it be nice to be able to undelete a message
by also clicking the delete key.
yes, this can be viewed as overloading the delete key to be delete and
undelete, but in reality it just turns it into a toggle of delete
