My duplicate bug #320666 (“But…but I reported it first!” :-P) has a
stack trace with debugging symbols that might be useful for tracking
down this problem. When I enter the correct password, and gnome-
screensaver-dialog just sits there displaying “Checking...”, top shows
that the CPU is spinning,
I've tested it with Jaunty Alpha 3 and it seems that it is a bug of the ubuntu
theme.
If I change the pop-up theme to "standard theme" it works as expected.

yes it is reproducible. At least on my computer. To recreate this bug just drag
and drop an MP3 or OGG file into your (firefox) browser window. On hardy these
files will start to play within the browser with the totem plugin. On Jaunty
these files will be offered to download because firefox

Ok, I ran it with the debug switch. That's opening vinagre, connecting
to the mac mini via a bookmark, copying a file on my local desktop,
having the VNC session freeze, and then closing the session via the X at
the top of the VNC window.

I was able to solve the problem by changing the fade mode setting on the
Fading Windows plugin so it uses the Speed setting instead of the Time
setting. I have no clue why it does this, but it solved the problem for
me.

Confirming this on a fully updated intrepid. This is a major annoyance
when using IMAP, as it takes a long time to recover (you have to
manually cancel all of the failed ping states before it tries again).
