closed a single tab to find that all terminal windows had vanished.

I don't think it makes sense at all in gdm:
- You do not actually "see" gdm if you have autologin enabled.
- Once you installed your system that way, the damage is done.
IMHO it should be pointed out right at the place when the user can still
do something about it to not break it: The autologin

I've opened a pdf document and clicked on print , I choose to print
2..3..4...(>1) copies of this single page document.
Despite of the number of copies I've selected only one sheet is printed!
