Sometimes when I open a pdf the text is completely missing. I can
highlight sections where text should be, but the text itself does not

I can confirm the problem:
When I try to eject a cd/dvd, Ubuntu intrepid inserts the cdrom right back in
the cd/dvd drive.

I don't think eds is crashing. Its PID is a low number (compared to the
rest) and appears pretty high up in "ps ax". I wasn't expecting this to
happen, so I was gdbing eds or anything at the time - post mordem only.

I experienced this one too. I opened Evince from the commandline, this way:
evince "http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~wkahan/JAVAhurt.pdf";
After reading the six or so first pages, I used other applications for an hour
or two (mostly Firefox).
When I returned to Evince and scrolled a bit up and down, I

Yes, the patch was tested. lbmount is run setuid root indeed, but pwent
contains real user information, not effective user information (it does
call "pwent = getpwuid(uidReal)" previously), so the directory will be
owned by the correct user.

asks you if you want to save it, but for the SMTP password only asks you
