I confirm that this is an issue. English desktop but Swedish locale
settings are indeed common here. I have always been setting LC_TIME for
my session for achieving this but that is of course hard for a new user
to know.
I always creates a file like this.

My Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX also stopped working when upgrading

Ok. It appears that link in the screenshot was actually left-over from
a previous install/upgrade somewhere along the way. Wouldn't be
surprising I guess as this system has been upgraded from Edgy without a
clean reinstall. If no-one else has seen this, I'm happy for this bug

Hi! I've changed the package hint of this bug, because it's the most probable
package being affected. I followed the methods you suggested, but the "gnome
sound preferences" doesn't have a help menu, so it doesn't have a "report a
problem" option, nor is it a package on its own. I hope this help

Went ahead and did some diagnosing as per the Debugging GPM wiki
article. I started GPM in verbose mode and set it to log to a file. I'm
posting the file as an attachment, as well as the relative event lines
in the comment here.
This is what happens when the AC is unplugged:

This is still happening with the last kernel on Hardy,
But, as result of some test, I've disables Compiz AND gnome-screensaver
(I put a black screen, just something without OpenGPL) and the issue
disappeared...
Maybe the people who disable compiz have a fancy screensaver and because

logs to attach (and how to get them), I'd be more than happy to

I can confirm. Pulseaudio is disabled, and my login sounds don't work. I
can't hit "play" in gnome-sound-properties. Nothing is send to stdout,
but nothing is played. aplay /usr/share/sounds/startup.wav works, no
errors, and plays the sound, but I don't hear it when I log in. Sound
works in literal
