Thanks for reporting this issue. However, this is not a bug since \n is
the Escape-Sequence for "new line". If you want to have it replaced by
"\n" you should use "\\n" as string thus escaping the "\" and preventing
it from being interpreted. Feel free to report any new issues you might
find.

I have some new information, it seems that on boot, the touchpad
settings are applied correctly, but then it seems that the kernel loses
connection to the touchpad and reconnects, but once it does this, then
the touchpad settings are lost

I suggest to add a "Run task manager" entry to gnome's panel context
menu, just like in Windows. This would be much easier to discover for
users than any keyboard shortcut.
