When I'm in fullscreen ("party") mode, if I move the mouse over a button or the
search box, for example, the whole screen flashes about twice per second. This
has happened since at least Gutsy or before with different video cards.

I have had this problem with Ubuntu 8.04, and later 8.04.1, even with all the
latest updates. I use a dial up modem and phone line to access the internet.

Nice work. Using #ifdefs like the upstream code may be a good idea, but
you seem to have found the cause of your issue.
The bug report is about a different issue though it seems, but that doesn't
mean we can't fix yours.
