A good temporary solution to these problems is to copy Bryce's noxcb
version of libx11 to a separate directory which you then prepend to
LD_LIBRARY_PATH before starting problematic apps. A simple if somewhat

I have xpdf-japanese installed. xpdf now displays the file OK. evince
is still broken. So is acroread which apparently has its own package
(not sure there is something in Ubuntu) for Japanese support. acroread

Thats not a proper fix. You shouldn't need to use sudo to open Alacarte,
and is actually a very bad idea. You could end up making your whole menu
inaccessible by messing up the permissions in your home folder.
Please try to run alacarte normally from the terminal and post any error

I went back to try the mouse disabling suggestion again. This time, I
fired up gconf-editor rather than run the suggested commandline. I
noticed I had both a gnome_settings_daemon and a gnome-settings-daemon.

They're all set to ALSA. Not PulseAudio. Setting to PulseAudio will
likely solve my immediate issue but is *not* the point of the bug
report. The point is that Rhythmbox should not crash if no sound server

The crash is actually a permissions error, most likely as a consequence
of opening Alacarte with sudo. To correct it, please try the following:
sudo chown -R $USER:$USER ~/.config
chmod -R u+rwX,go-w ~/.config
