I have the same problem. I use my internal UMTS modem of my Dell
notebook to connect to the internet by using umtsmon. Applications like

/usr/lib/libeel-2.so.2.22.1, which seems to be correct, since dpkg shows
(only) /usr/lib/libeel-2.so.2.22.1 as installed by libeel2-2. There were
some other libeel*.so* in /usr/local/lib/, which I removed, but the
problem is still there.

I've installed that patch on my Dell XPS m1530 laptop and my Desktop
running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. It works flawlessly. Nvidia-settings
no longer reset after gnome-screensaver is activated.
