As of Ubuntu 8.04 with Totem Movie Player 2.22.1 (version that installs
with 8.04) this problem is far from fixed. Totem (seemingly randomly)
either crashes, freezes, tells me my CDROM isn't responding (yea right).

Same problem occurs for me. Default ubuntu install with nvidia drivers
running compiz. Attempt to drag a file in nautilus, and the system will
become nearly non-responsive.
Replacing compiz with metacity by running "metacity --replace" allows
drag and drop to work just fine.

I'll throw my experience with this bug into the hat. I just upgraded
from Gutsy, in which this feature worked correctly, to Hardy, in which
the bug appeared. Hardy is currently up to date.
First, I reverted my Gnome keyboard preferences to the default. I tried

This morning when I booted in Ubuntu, it performed a routine fsck on my home
partition. But it hanged! Fsck ended prematurely and it asked me to perform the
test manually. Now when I tried to do so, I found out that my keyboard was not

Interesting findings.
To confirm the performance issue is caused by gnome-settings-daemon, I
just run following test:
1. Ctrl + Alt + F1, login
2. X :1 -query localhost
Then a similar window appears like open a VNC session. In this X
session, the performance is good.
So I guess it's a Xvnc <->

I tried disabling compiz and enabling compiz. Crash still occurred with
no report. I then tried on a third system with an nvidia graphics card
using the 96.* drivers, firefox did not crash in that setup.
Then I tried uninstalling the nVidia drivers and the crash stopped
happening (on both systems

I am confirming I have the same problem with Hardy final.
Shutdown takes a long time... and when I tried
# date && /etc/init.d/gdm stop && date
it takes exactly 30 seconds to stop gdm.
I suppose it has been not caused by NM, because I tried uninstall it,
reboot, and the problem is still here.
