In nautilus, click "add bookmark" from the menu or press Ctrl-D. The bookmark
briefly appears in the bookmark sidebar, but then disappears again.

Well... the problem is that the app allows users to shoot themselves in
the foot, and they often do. In fact, even experienced users who should
know better (like myself at times) can have a brain fart and choose that
smaller resolution.
If the tool allows you to set a screen resolution less than 8
you get the revert dialog after doing the change which should be enough
to let you decide to not do that, changing the combo location will make
no difference since you will still not be able to click on the buttons
to apply whatever you select

This issue is caused by Nvidia's proprietary driver, if you switch the
hue settings in Totem (or gstreamer) from minimum to maximum you'll get
normal playback again. Unfortuantely, this doesn't change the issue

Actually, that last epiphany screenshot was better than it was
originally because I went to about:config and switched font.size.unit
from "pt" to "px". So you'll notice that the text in the left sidebar

Which type of subtitles are you trying to display? Does it works with
totem with another new user created on your system?

%h" (found in earlier versions of ubuntu), "gthumb --import-photos" and
back to hardy's default "f-spot-import" (and variants with/without %h).
Nothing worked for me.
