For added clarification I went to the "Layout Options" window in Keyboard
Preferences. The help button in the window closes the windo

mail with pop3 and thay are properly downloaded. It is only later (some
days after) that some mails became corrupted. But at this time there is
no communication with the ervere for these emails.

Ditto, exact same situation as the above - login to gdm causes it to
halt permanently on beige screen (and I can still Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log in
fine on the terminal). Log messages are also identical, so I won't
bother reposting.
