My debian server runs with "security = share". All public directories
work fine but the shared home directories which require authentication

That isn't the problem I have, the theme does not work when I am using
it as my normal user. It must be a theme specific problem because any
other random icon theme I have installed works fine.
Also, the forward/back/etc buttons in nautilus seem to use the Glass
theme now, but still not the icons

I remember trying to run ldd /user/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0, I believe I got an
error message like 'could not find package' or something.

Recently (I'm not sure when) the brightness applet has started at 0%.
However the screen is fully bright.
Moving the applet dims the screen until it gets to fully bright at 100%
again.
I'm using a Toshiba SP6050 running Hardy beta.

Hi,
My apologies, I managed to confuse myself, so I don't think
I'll need that information after all.
I have a patch that I think will fix this problem, it will be uploaded
shortly. Could you please test the new version and report back
as to whether it works correctly or not.

Then how can I debug or provide you with more information? I did ran a strace
on gedit and clicked the "Open" button once, which resulted in two "click
sounds", and spotted only one gtk click event:
