This is happening because the HAL backend in GVFS is being used to set
the name for volumes. If the volume's label isn't set, then HAL has no
clue of what the volume's name should be, and it falls back to setting
it based on the volume's size (%s media).

The display is even set perhaps to Liquid crystal mode when booting.

Vincenzo that is on my mind but don't have the resources (yet) for doing
so. Once I have that, there are number of things I would like to try
out. Yes, it did escape the the crtl+alt+backspace combo for trying to
get back the gdm . Will try when it lock or whatever it does again &
report back.

I disagree that this is fixed.
It doesn't the solve the problem where you delete files off a storage
device, but there's still no free space to copy new files on. You can't
empty the trash on a disk-by-disk basis.
