I saw this start just after I installed the sound suite.
The workaround I have is that I added the line "sleep 10s" to
/etc/init.d/dbus, as follows:

Its a problem with gnome as far as I can tell and as I was using Mint Linux
3.0 at the time (the Gnome based version) I haven't reproduced this result
so far with the later version of Mint Linux 4.0 (KDE based) based upon
Ubuntu 7.10. or with Kubuntu.

I managed to go as far as downloading the source and applying the patch
however when I am having troubles rebuilding the package. I gave it up
for today but will try again tomorrow.

Please goto System->Preferences->Sound
In there, in Devices tab (the first tab), select the tracks and device
which you want to control with the keyboard keys. In your case, ensure
that PCM track is selected.
This should solve your problem.

I have confirmed that Top reads GSM as using approximately the same CPU%
as GMS itself shows. excessive usage does not appear to be a display

I couldn't reproduce this issue using Hardy Heron, i can without any trouble
load the images in a given mail without having to change the preferences from
"Never load images from the internet", a simple Ctrl+I do the job here, via
"view -> Load images" menu works also.

desktop-manager related packages. I have gnome-menus (2.20.1-0ubuntu1),

I've noticed since that very occasionally (maybe once in 15 loads) it
will not update the fullscreen correctly, the background (black bars)
